Singin’ in the Bathtub, 1999, New York, NY: Sony Legacy. 38 minutes.
Age/Interest Level: 1-12 years
Lexile Level: N/A
Awards: N/A
Reader Annotation: Television and stage star John Lithgow delivers a special performance of big band numbers intended for children.
Plot Summary: Some people might not think big band numbers could be perfect for young children, but then some people aren’t John Lithgow. His trademark style appears on numbers like “At the Codfish Ball”. “The Hippopotamus”, and the titular “Singin’ in the Bathtub”. The songs are far from traditional music for toddlers and above, but Mr. Lithgow is a true performer and unafraid to use his character voice in order to create a silly, fun recording.
Critical Evaluation: This is a really fun recording and, while the songs themselves are rather old classics in their own right, the performance is what makes this so enjoyable. John Lithgow is a fine singer, but he embellishes each song, turning them into dance numbers of sheer fun. Lithgow has gone on to produce two more albums for children and his style is absolutely unique, especially as a break from more traditional songs for children.
Why Included: These songs can be played over and over again and it’s like the party is just beginning. These are great movement pieces.
