Explora. (2016). EBSCOhost [subscription database]. Retrieved from https://www.ebscohost.com/us-high-schools/explora
Age/Interest Level: 5-12 years
Lexile Level: N/A
Awards: N/A
Reader Annotation: Explora is intended as a basic research tool for school children. With easy to browse sections and high-quality articles gathered from around the world, it’s a perfect tool for beginning to advanced student researchers.
Summary: Explora allows for kids to browse for articles in one of two ways: Typing in search time to find books and journals or by browsing through various broad topics until they find a specific section. Explora also highlights select articles on their homepage, which are potential suggestions for researchers unsure of what to explore. There is the added benefit of Lexile limiters, which limit the search results to the preferred Lexile Reading Level.
Critical Evaluation: This is a great resource, and the ability to limit searchers based on Lexile Level is incredibly useful in finding works which would be more suitable for a first grader rather than a fifth grader. The site is incredibly easy to use and utilizes a realistic way of performing searches. It is very much like a database intended for adults, though more bright colors attend to appear on each page. This provides kids with the realization that they are doing actual research and not just stumbling around a website intended for children.
Why Included: This is one of the few databases which does not necessarily talk down to children. It’s a thorough database with solid articles available for viewing on an easy-to-use interface.
