Roll and Play Board Game, 2012, Alexandria, VA: ThinkFun. Board game.
Age/Interest Level: 18+ months
Lexile Level: N/A
Awards: N/A
Reader Annotation: Players toss a big plush cube and grab a card based on the corresponding color. Performing the action on the card is both educational and fun in this first board game specifically designed for toddlers.
Summary: Players toss a large, soft die. Whichever color the die lands on, the player then finds a card which matches. On each card is an action the player then has to perform. These range from the fairly simple, like, “Make a happy face,” to the silly, “Moo like a cow.” It’s intended for toddlers to play with parents, encouraging play while forming a tighter bond.
Critical Evaluation: This is incredibly fun for toddlers. This isn’t a simple pick a card and perform an action, much like Charades. Rather, the game makers have added some complexity with the addition of a die that players then have to find the corresponding card for. The actions are simple for parents, but they are fantastic at beginning more complex play for children as well as allowing for the practice of reading, listening, and responding skills.
Why Included: This game is unique in that it is the first board game intended for toddlers. That makes it inherently different and fun. More so, though, it provides an alternative for some parents who aren’t always interested in their children playing apps but are running out of homemade ideas.
