Summary: eLibrary Elementary is a research database specifically for elementary school children on a host of topics. Students can browse across eight broad topics leading to narrower ‘branches’, or they can choose to input search terms and limit results newspapers, magazines, books, maps, pictures, audo/video, and transcripts. All results have been vetted and are intended for a young audience. There’s even a virtual reference desk which allows for general reference questions which can be answered with a dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, etc. search.
Critical Evaluation: This is a great resource, particularly for teaching beginning research. All available results have been previously vetted so there is an incredibly small risk of coming across subjectively objectionable materials. The interface is incredibly easy to navigate and it is intentionally kept sparse so that students are not distracted by too many options. Pictures as well as words are used to represent selection choices, and the association makes it easier for students to repeat searches.
Why Included: Research is essential to the learning process, and this is one of the easiest ways for students to learn how to sift through broad amounts of information. The interface is incredibly easy to learn.
