Fancy Nancy and the Delectable Cupcakes, by Jane O’Connor, illustrated by Ted Enik, 2010, New York, NY: HarperCollins. 32 pages. ISBN: 978-0061882685.
Age/Interest Level: 5-8 years
Lexile Level: 350L
Awards: N/A
Reader Annotation: Nancy is thrilled to make cupcakes for the bake sale. However, when Nancy’s dog, Frenchy, eats all the cupcakes, will Nancy be able to remember her mother’s instructions for making them again?
Plot Summary: Fancy Nancy is so excited to be baking cupcakes for her class back sale. The only trouble is that she can’t seem to remember directions very well. Forgetting that her mother told her to keep the cupcakes away from Frenchy, the dog, Nancy leaves them too close and Frenchy eats them all. Now it’s a matter of Nancy remembering the exact recipe her mother told her so that she can bake a new batch.
Critical Evaluation: This is a lovely beginning reader book that stresses the importance of listening to instructions. Nancy is a character who shows considerable growth over the story’s quick progression, and she appears to be a good role model for children. As a beginning reader, the work is limited by its use of language, but it works effectively here. To increase the vocabulary, ‘fancy’ words are tossed in like ‘exhausted’ and ‘velvet’. The plot is straightforward and very easy to follow while also making it incredibly funny.
Why Included: Nancy is a strong role model for how to admit mistakes and work to correct behavior. The story itself is nice and fun while also challenging with an expanded use of vocabulary.
