Age/Interest Level: 8-12 years
Lexile Level: N/A
Awards: James Beard Foundation Award for Publication of the Year (2013)
Reader Annotation: ChopChop was created for the sole purpose of inspiring children to cook great meals with their families. It contains recipes, puzzles and games, and lots of great food tips.
Plot Summary: ChopChop is focused on inspiring kids to want to cook great, healthy dishes along with their families. Each issue contains multiple recipes corresponding to what foods are in season, which ties into their mission of pushing for everyone to eat fresh when possible. While most recipes require adult supervision and help, the purpose of the magazine is for kids to get the conversation started. It is published four times a year in both Spanish and English.
Critical Evaluation: Cooking is a tricky topic to publish a children’s magazine on, because it’s something that requires a great deal of adult supervision. However, ChopChop taps into that as being a great asset. Their view is that adults should be right there, cooking with their children, so oftentimes kids need to start that conversation. It’s really an ingenious way to promote healthy living.
Why Included: ChopChop is a great resource for recipes that aren’t necessarily kid friendly, but are definitely kid-inspired and definitely need a kid to help make them. It’s a respectable, unique vision. As well, it’s published simultaneously in Spanish, the second most popular language in the U.S., making it an invaluable resource for a large swath of communities. That commitment to inclusion is prevalent throughout the publication with many different types of families shown in each issue.
